The idea of being your own boss is one of the most tempting ideas when it comes to the “American Dream” – and although most people find that “being their own boss” is not quite all it is supposed to be, this is still something that holds sway over the imaginations of many. Not that being one’s own boss is no fun but one of the first things you need to realize about the dream of “being your own boss” is that work is still work – and you will still have to work just as hard when you are your own boss if you want to make money.
The most common form of “being one’s own boss” is starting a small business, but while a small business used to mean a storefront and a fair amount of overhead, you can use the internet these days – either to sell things, or to offer a service – which will save you a lot of money on start-up and maintenance costs.
Another thing that people often do not think of as a case of “being one’s own boss” is being a consultant; when you are a consultant, you can work for different companies, but you never have to worry about getting fired or working for a boss you dislike, as you have the freedom to choose who you work for.
And doing freelance work is one of the best “be your own boss” approaches of all; like being a consultant, freelance work allows you to pick up jobs for different companies, but unlike consulting work, freelance work typically allows you to work from home, and it allows you to work on several projects at once!
Working in an office, of course is something that some people actually find they enjoy more than they enjoy being their own boss, but if you feel that “being your own boss” is something worth trying, there is certainly nothing wrong with taking the leap!
